Frost covered trees on Little Caribou Island. The island appears to be floating between the frozen surface of Skilak Lake and the sky. Sam took this photo from the beach on Caribou Island. He threw the rocks out on the ice to see if they’d go through. At the time of this photo we were stranded on the island waiting for the lake to freeze up..

So pretty & calm, but we can feel the intense freeze.
Thank you, Joyce Becotte! Couldn’t agree more!
Hello Bonnie—Anne Dodds here (Widows Walk Off Grid) I am so enthralled with your story–wow–I am so glad your wrote it—it gives others courage and an idea what IT’S really like Off Grid.
Good luck —Thank you for sharing your life with us.
Hi Anne, the feeling is so mutual. I absolutely loved your book “A Widow’s Walk Off-Grid To Self-Reliance” a very inspirational read. I laughed and cried with you and have nothing but complete admiration for you! I am thrilled that you are liking Winds of Skilak also. I think we’ve both lived very adventurous lives! Good Luck to you as well and thank you for dropping by. I hope to hear from you again soon, Anne! Thank you!
I loved the story. But I kept waiting for you to have a baby! Did you ever? That would have been a great story.
Hi Susan,
I’m so glad to hear that you “loved” the story. Ha! I hate to disappoint you, but I never had a baby! However, I know of a story like that. It’s called Oh, Rugged Land of Gold by Martha Martin! It’s an older book, and I believe it might be out of print, but it’s an amazing story of a woman stranded alone in the wilderness and she has a baby. Sam and I first read the book when we lived on the island. We still have our copy. Hey, I just looked on amazon and they have used copies for sale. It was a really great read! Well, Susan, I hope you’ll take a few moments and leave me a review on amazon. I appreciate that you took the time to write me. Hope to hear from you again soon! Thank you!
Hi Bonnie, I just finished reading your book and I loved it!! Was really bummed when it came to the end. Did you write a follow up? I really want to know when why how you moved from the lake and what took you to where you are now and Ann Dodds….I loved your book also! I admire both of you strong woman and hope you all are doing well and in good health…Sam too!
